Math 8

Back to School Night Presentation

MDTP Online

Welcome to a new year at SVMS and to our Math 8 class. I am very excited about this class this year. We are going to study:

  • Exponents and Scientific Notation
  • Transformations and the Pythagorean Theorem
  • Linear Functions and Equations
  • Systems of Equations
  • Volume
  • Bivariate Data
  • Rational Numbers

We are following the California Common Core State Standards which encourage a lot of reasoning and exploring in mathematics. It makes math class a lot more fun. We will be using the CPM Course 3 as our main curriculum for this course. It is an amazing, research-based program that encourages students to work together to interact deeply with mathematical concepts. This curriculum is very different than math curriculum from when we were students, so please do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions!

An important component of this course will be discussion of mathematical ideas. It is imperative that you follow along in class and contribute to class discussions. In addition, you will have regular challenge sheets that will require you to explain your reasoning in writing.

FRACTION PRACTICE

Here are some practice for fraction skills and integer skills:

Adding Fractions with unlike denominators

Subtracting Fractions with unlike denominators

Adding and subtracting integers
