Student Handbook

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! We at SVMS are looking forward to a happy, productive, learning filled year.  Please review the following information to assure that you have a successful year at SVMS.

Anti-Discrimination Policy

District programs and activities shall be free from all unlawful discriminating. This means that discrimination and/or harassment based on ethnic group, gender, religion, sexual orientation, color, race, national origin or physical or mental disability (or the perception of one or more of these characteristics) shall not be tolerated. If a student or a parent has a concern or wishes to file a complaint, please contact the school principal or the Educational Services department at the district office. Full copies of the District's policy and complaint procedures may be obtained on the district web site or by contacting the district superintendent's office.

At SVMS, there are two levels of honor roll:  Principal’s List and Honor Roll.  Principal’s List is for students who earn all A’s in their classes. Honor Roll recipients earn 4 A’s and 2 B’s or 5 A’s and 1 B in their classes. Additionally, each year one 8th grader is awarded the Mierley J. Bailey leadership award at the graduation ceremony.  This award is voted on by the SVMS faculty and presented to a graduating 8th grader who exhibits positive leadership qualities.

  • Parents should email ( call the office immediately to report any student absence.  If parents do not call the office within three days of the absence with a reason, the absence will be marked unexcused.

  • Illness, doctor/dental appointments, religious observances, and death within the family are the only reasons the State of California accepts as excused absences.

  • All other absences will be recorded as unexcused unless a student has an Independent Study Contract.

  • Students who have excessive excused or unexcused absences may be asked to appear before SARB (Student Attendance Review Board) to determine whether or not Scotts Valley Middle School is the appropriate learning environment for them.

  • Family vacations and trips out of town ARE NOT excused absences.  Teachers are not required to give work to students before they leave for vacation, nor are they expected to meet with students who have missed school for vacations to re-teach the material.

Students must be in attendance for a minimum of four periods of school to participate in extracurricular activities that day.  This includes but is not limited to sporting events and school dances.

All students are required to complete five hours of community service for every year (or part of the year) they attend SVMS.  A student who attends SVMS for 6th through 8th grades is required to complete 15 hours.  Timesheets are available in the school office and on the SVMS website. Community service is work within the community that is not compensated (no payment of any kind).  Possible opportunities include; organizations/clubs, local businesses, neighbors, churches/synagogues, SVEF, etc.   Unique and timely opportunities are often posted on the Community Service bulletin board in the main hallway.

Tardies are very disruptive to the other students and the teachers in a class.  Tardies also inhibit a student’s ability to fully benefit from daily instruction.  Therefore, it is very important to be on time every day to every class.

  • Students will receive one hour of after school detention for every (4) four unexcused tardies to school per trimester.

  • After two detentions (8 tardies to first period), a student will not be allowed to attend the next dance.

  • Habitually tardy students and their parents will be referred to SARB (School Attendance Review Board)

Remember, excused reasons for being late to school are a doctor/dental appointment, family emergency, or illness.  When arriving late to school the office MUST receive a call or note from a parent, otherwise, it will be considered an unexcused tardy.
